July 23, 2010- The gas well that exploded and caught fire in the western part of Pennsylvania Friday morning, was still burning into the evening.
Two people are reported dead after an explosion at the site in Indiana Township — northeast of Pittsburgh.
Police say two maintenace workers were killed and a third escaped injury while working on oil tanks, and using welding torches.
One of the tanks was propelled more than 70 feet by the force of the blast.
The incident occured shortly before 10AM.
An expert firefighting team from Texas was being flown in to battle the blaze.
After being informed of the incident by Fox 40 news, a spokesperson from Congressman Maurice Hinchey’s office said that this latest accident underlines the need for oversight into the drilling industry because there are “lots of risks” to industry workers and the public.
