Residents voice concern at Wheeling meetings Topics include zoning requests, GreenHunter site plan review

By Celina Pompeani

WHEELING, W.Va.

The city of Wheeling held its planning commission meeting Monday night to discuss issues concerning zoning requests and to review the GreenHunter proposal plan…

Other topics on Monday night’s agenda included rezoning Wood Street, which didn’t concern many, and also reviewing GreenHunter’s site plan.

GreenHunter wants to build a facility on North 28 Street to handle and recycle frack water from the oil and gas industry.

“So what they’re seeking is permission to use the property on North 28 Street for their industrial use so the planning commission will be reviewing their plans for the property,” said Tom Connelly, assistant director of economic and community development.

Connelly said the city’s planning commission will be looking at a number of items.

Some of the major concerns with this is increased traffic in the city, the brine water trucks could present hazards to residents, and the brine water supply could be a threat to the water supply.

“We want to make sure when we welcome businesses in the city, we also protect our residents so we just want to make sure we have a good mix of the two types of land uses,” said Connelly.

In Monday night’s meeting they only discussed phase one of the GreenHunter plan.

The issues talked about tonight did pass, but the planning commission must approve the site plan before GreenHunter can submit their construction plans to the next meeting which will be coming up in July.
